What is the Ideal Age to get Dental Braces ??

What is the ideal age to get Dental Braces

One question which is in everyone's mind who have maligned teeth are, "What is the Ideal Age for getting Braces" or "What is the Ideal Age to Start Orthodontic Treatment?". If the answer has to be in terms of Ideal conditions in the human body for starting Orthodontic treatment, it would be from ages 10 to 14 years of age, this is also called as the Mixed Dentition phase. Where you will be having the Deciduous teeth along with almost all the Permanent teeth have Erupted into the Arch. This is also the Age from which we can see Malocclusion forming clearly. So many have the doubt whether one can get braces before the Ideal Age of Malocclusion or after the Age of 18 yrs to 20 yrs. Yes you can start your Orthodontic treatment even after the age of 18 years up to 60 years of Age if need permits. We personally have treated Spacing in Elder patients above the age of 50 years with good results. It is just that it takes a little more time when compared to younger patients because of multiple factors affecting the movement of teeth and bone remodeling. What is the ideal age to get Dental Braces Why is 12 to 14 years considered ideal age for Starting Orthodontic treatment? It is considered as idea age as most of the Permanent teeth have erupted into the oral cavity - Canines and Second Molars which for the anchor points for the Anterior and Posterior teeth respectively. This gives a clear idea about the Malocclusion. The other point is the Bone development which is not completed and it will be much easier to move teeth and give it time for the Bone to harden. What is the Ideal Age for your Childs first Orthodontic Evaluation? The ideal time for the Orthodontic Evaluation for your Child is between the ages of 6 to 8 years, this the period when the Permanent Upper and Lower First Molars as well as the Anterior - Incisors Erupt into the Oral Cavity. This is the time when you can look out for certain variations or differences in Occlusion which we will be mentioning below. If your Dentist after evaluation feels that we can wait and watch, there will not be any need for Treatment at that age "Braces are not given in patients in this age group". If your Dentist feels that there is need to intervene, your child will be given certain appliances - Removable or Fixed depending on the Problem which will help in intercepting the development of the Malocclusion and correct it in the process. This is called as "Interceptive Orthodontics". What are the Problems which you need to Watch in your Children in 6 to 8 years of Age? The age from 6 to 8 years in your child is when we can first start seeing the start of Malocclusion, there are 9 types of problems which you can watch out for and consult your Dentist. As Dental Malocclusion is Hereditary, if either the mother or father has malocclusion it is highly likely that the child might develop it.
  1. Excessive Spacing
  2. Crowding
  3. Open Bite
  4. Deep Bite or Overbite
  5. Cross Bite (Anterior or Front Teeth)
  6. Cross Bite (Posterior or Back Teeth)
  7. Underbite
  8. Overjet (Protrusion)
  9. Abnormal Eruption - Eruption of Teeth out of the Arch
These are the 9 problems which you need to look out for in your Child, if you observe that any one of the below problems are seen in your child. Take a Dentist Consultation to check about the possible treatment plan. Your child might not need braces immediately in most cases but in some cases immediate intervention is necessary, with Orthodontic Appliances which help direct the teeth or Jaw to erupt or grow properly into occlusion.
